Great at Playing the Scumbag
It was an immense shame to lose this fascinating and always-watchable actor, but what I find interesting about his career is how his various characters could be mostly divided into two types: ursine, staunch and usually dependable military types (e.g. Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Dreamcatcher), and the roles I tend to remember him most for, as a gleefully unhinged, trigger-happy scumbag (often to the point where I was watching a Tom Sizemore film in anticipation of a third act reveal, especially if he was cast as the ostensible 'best friend'). Think Lock Up, Strange Days, Heat and Bringing Out the Dead.
