How do you die in a “hiking accident”?

I assume he fell a fair distance and perhaps struck his head and was killed. But the headline “Died in a Hiking Accident” does make one curious. I’ve not read of any autopsy report. Does anyone know what exactly caused his death?

He went hiking in treacherous mountain territory during one of the worst ever winter storms on record. That his remains weren't found until six months after his last sighting should help illustrate the extreme level of snowfall in the area.

What are the odds of someone who prepped for a day of hiking surviving six months in hundreds of inches of unrelenting snowfall?

reply

Treacherous terrain. Sudden, brutal weather conditions. Even the most accomplished hiker can suffer a catastrophic situation where hypothermia (or hyperthermia in hot conditions) can quickly disable them. If they suffer a fall, it can be over very quickly. And unless you have a Sat phone and are able to call for help, things can turn really bad, really really quickly.

He was hit by a huge winter storm while hiking. Weather change quick that high up. He was unprepared.

its really quite easily actually. a freak accident, getting lost, a sudden weather change. ive watched alot of those survival shows and its surprisingly easy to die even for experienced travellers. hypothermia, starvation, injury. We are so used to modern comforts and never truly needing anythng to save ourselves in our day to day lives. but when you cant plan for everything even being without or hit by a seemingly small thing like a sudden heavy rain while being lost for a day or two can kill you.
