They probably gave her everything, she wanted for nothing and she only gave them grief.

They probably spoiled her rotten and let her walk all over them. She probably tested the boundaries her entire life and found that she could get away with whatever she wanted to. Finally, at the age of 26, she attacked her mother with a weapon and for the first time found a line her parents wouldn't let her cross.

She was 26 years old and still living at home, for christ's sake! Her parents weren't "saddled" with her, they were letting her take advantage of them. When she stabbed her mother, she was probably upset because they wouldn't buy her an iPhone.

Doubt that was it -- an iphone would be small potatoes for two Hollywood stars, even aging ones. For the rest of us that'd be like buying the kid a chocolate bar.

Frankly the reason it happened is nobody's business but the family's (and hopefully a therapist's). It's very sad that it did. As a parent I can say it's always your nightmare that your child, whom you love so much and have so much invested in emotionally, would someday turn against you.

Katharine Ross has been amazing in some of my favorite films from the 60s and early 70s and it makes me sad that such a thing happened in her life.

There's a lot more to this story. Their daughter has a history of being physically and verbally abusive, which tells me that there's a history of mental illness here. Odds are high that they were letting their daughter live with them because of this, which put both Elliott and Ross at a high risk of being attacked.

However I do think that there might be a bit of "overly permissive" going on here. Ross got a restraining order, but didn't show up to the second hearing and as a result it was dismissed. It's not as easy as saying "don't be crazy or I'll cut you off", but I think that in this case it would've been better to keep the restraining order for a little longer and to insist that the daughter get serious psychological help. This has been going on for about 12-13 years. You can't just get rid of mental ailments through legal means, but it would've been better if they'd had her declared mentally incompetent and used that as a way to put her in a mental institution where she could have people helping her with her issues. She clearly can't discern right from wrong if she's trying to kill her mother.

I mean, the girl even cut the phone line so her mother couldn't call for help. That tells me that her daughter put at least some thought into this beforehand, so odds are that if proper help isn't received then she'll probably do this again... and maybe succeed the second time.

True, we don't know how she was raised,and you cannot judge based on the fact that the parents are likable movie stars. Benefit of the doubt is always given to movie stars
