Did anyone see the animated Charlottes Web as kids?

I had it on VHS around 1992 or 1993. I think we bought it at Mcdonalds as part of the Happy Meal, I remember the cover had the M on it. Whenever my childhood bff would come over, we would watch it, but I guess I got bored because I don't ever remember seeing the end. I just remembered the We Have Lots in Common song and Templeton the Rat. When I was in 3rd grade we sang Lots in common in our chorus concert on the last day of school.

My mom and my aunts and uncle remember seeing it when it came out in 1973 as they were kids/teenagers. My mom was 14 and I think she saw it with my uncle who was 9.

Watching it now, years later as a guy who will be 28 in 5 months, that scene at the end as she died brought tears to my eyes. I discovered the song in 2010 but now it's even sadder. She had such a soothing voice. I saw the live action one 10 years ago and this was when I was still relatively unfamiliar with the entire story, despite seeing the cartoon one as a little kid.

I sure did watch it! I think it aired on CBS. I remember when Charlotte died.

reply

Yep. Charlotte's death always made me cry.

reply

Yes. I thought that Debbie Reynolds had the perfect "mother" voice as Charlotte. I remember wishing my mother sound like that.

reply

I did as well.

I remember it was also a third grade class project for us to read the book, watch Charlotte's Web (1973), then write a report. It was actually quite fun. I also recollect being saddened by Charlotte's death in the end. (Trust me, I wasn't the only one, LOL!)

We did the same for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; read the book, watched Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), and had a written assignment.

I wish I had known whom Debby Reynolds was at the time. 

Her voice in that was amazing. When Charlotte dies and she's singing that song....so beautiful. I always cry

I forgot about her playing the voice of 'Charlotte'.

reply

She offered to play the voice for free. What a wonderful lady.
After seeing the end scene I am surprised I wasn't loudly sobbing. lol. Poor Wilbur. I wonder if she ever sang that song to her grandchildren.

I avoided watching this movie for years, because I couldn't bear to watch a cartoon pig weeping over the death of a spider.
