The Trump of his time?
Discuss.
shareI remember someone referring to Reagan as 'Evil Incarnate'...
Should this really be the case then Reagan is like Darth Vader: everyone respects and praises him despite of his evilness.
Now Trump is... more like Jabba the Hutt.
Two great men.
shareReagan used to dress in white suits and wear cowboy hats to present himself as some sort of maverick. It didn't go down well with most people. For his 1980 campaign he dropped that bizarre image and tried to appear more mainstream.
He didn't say things for a reaction but he did have some good one liners. He put the line 'tear down this wall' into the speech despite everyone saying to leave it out. It stands as one of the greatest presidential soundbites of all time.
He was like Trump in the sense that he was the 'outsider' and 'former showbiz' candidate, but he was also a former governor so he had more political experience than Trump.
While there are some parallels that can be drawn between Reagan and Trump, the two men have nothing in common, personality-wise. It's why I find the comparison troubling, because Reagan was greatly loved by people from both parties (and he did have critics, just saying) whereas Trump is treated like a pariah on one side of the aisle, and a best friend on the other. Trump is also very brash and headstrong, whereas Reagan was more tactful about his ambitions. They do have some things in common when it comes to how they got to the White House, but otherwise, it's a very shaky comparison.
shareIf Reagan had been a one term president, he would have been a hero. At the time he was something the country needed, the image of a strong and capable leader even if it was all a lie and done with criminal shenanigans; unfortunately he got a 2nd term and other people ran the country into the ground in his name. FYI, Reagan was the last Republican candidate for president that got my vote although ironically George Bush Sr was a better president in retrospect.
shareHe's not orange.
shareI took off work the day of his funeral to watch it on tv and I cried like a baby.
