Catherine O'Hara a beauty chameleon

Most fans of SCTV and Catherine O'Hara like to point out that she was very beautiful.

I wouldn't go so far as to say beautiful, but I do agree Catherine O'Hara was pretty. Oh yeah, I wouldn't have turned down a date with her.

The trouble with defining Catherine O'Hara's looks as beautiful or pretty was that in SCTV she had to change her appearance so often to fit a humor or satire skit one way or another. In some skits O'Hara could actually look gorgeous, depending on the make-up and clothes. In some, she could look dowdy.
Take for instance, her stewardess role on the SCTV 1981 humor satire horror movie skit, "Doctor Tongue's 3D House of Stewardesses", a mockery of the 1950s and 60s exploitation B-horror cheapie flicks. In her short, red-brunette hair-style, skillful makeup, stewardess uniform, Catherine O'Hara did indeed look beautiful and sexy, especially as she was/is blessed with a photogenic smile that increases her facial beauty when she does smile. You were able to glimpse the form of her body after Doctor(funnyman John Candy)Tongue's assistant Igor (hilariously played by Eugene Levy) rips off Catherine's stewardess uniform and those of her fellow three stewardesses. She looked okay but nothing that glamourous. Catherine O'Hara had the pretty face. To her credit, she is attractive for a woman of her age at 54.

That's the great thing about her and Andrea Martin. Actually, all the women who were in Second City at the time (Jayne Eastwood, Robin Duke, etc). They weren't afraid of being ugly or frumpy for the sake of comedy.

I always figured Andrea Martin would be considered the great beauty of SCTV - and she is pretty, don't get me wrong - because she's exotic looking. But over time I found that everyone had a crush on Cath, even the guys who worked with her! She's no raving beauty, but I guess it's the whole "normal girl" thing that makes her attractive.

Was there BOOZE in there?! You ass!

Not cool.

I don't think that's fair.

Catherine's definitely beautiful, and you can tell even now that the men who work with her (ESPECIALLY Eugene Levy... I mean, wow) have it pretty bad for her. The thing with Catherine is that beauty was a natural and rather inconsequential thing for her. She's a committed actress and as such is worrying about acting. She's a normal person, blessedly un-obsessed with fame and fortune, and does good work.

She's almost the prototype of Western good looks: blonde hair, big blue eyes, fair skin, slender... she's always been pretty. Watch some old SCTV on YouTube. She looks really, really pretty in the "Milk of Amnesia" sketch, as Lola Heatherton (her body is SICK), in High-Q with her hair braided. If you ever get a chance to read Dave Thomas's book about SCTV, he points out that Catherine could be funny and dowdy but she also could be sexy, something a lot of female comedians, especially at the time, weren't doing.

I think Andrea Martin is also insanely attractive and people called her "ethnic" and too dark. It's a matter of perception. She and Cath are both still hot.

I guess it's a given in our society that male performers are judged on their talent, while female performers are judged on their looks. No one refers to the male SCTV performers as "DILFs" – and probably with good reason.

Catherine and Andrea were both very attractive, but more to the point, their appearances and talent as comics allowed them to take on varied roles – Catherine as bimbos like Brooke Shields and Lola Heatherton (I wanna bear her children!), Andrea as brainier beauties like Indira Gandhi and Edith Prickley. Of course, Catherine also played a great Katharine Hepburn, and Andrea did a hilarious Joyce de 1/2-Witt, so they weren't confined by their looks or, once again, their talent, which is what matters to me most.

I stayed up late (pre VCR days) watching SCTV as a horny high school teenager. I had the hots for Catherine O'Hara for the reasons already mentioned, she got placed in some sexy roles and she played the part well. At the same time, Andrea Martin never did anything for me. But now that I watch SCTV on DVD, wow I don't know what the hell was wrong with me.
