I just wanted to say that I have watched him in a few films - period drama - and what strikes me is how amazing he is at portraying vulnerability. There's something about it that rings so true and I've never seen any other actor do it as well. Saw an Elementary episode today where he was talking to the Captain and again, he is soooo good.

shareagreed, JLM is a master at portraying vulnerability without thereby sacrificing the strength, or masculinity, of whatever character he is playing. One of the reasons I actually prefer his Sherlock to Cumberbatch's (who don't get me wrong gives a great performance) is his ability to inject that vulnerability which makes everything more unpredictable and makes the emotional stakes higher
