What is her motivation on Californication?

I have just recently begun watching Californication (S01E05), and I do not get the motivation of her character in the series.

She seems to treat Hank like a little child that you don't want to break the stride on, but how did they end up in this situation? If things were bad enough for her to leave him, how come she seems so soft for him?

They obviously had a kick ass relationship, but what turned it ? And what I find the sad part, is that Hank needs that lost love in order to survive, both as a writer and as a human.

Please, if any of these questions are answered throughout the series, please just state that it will, no specifics or spoilers :) I just wanted to let you know what got _me_ hooked.

I love the love lost, the misadjusted dad who tries with a full heart and half a brain, the bitter hatred of LA and the people inhabiting it. ( A little Two and a Half Men meets Sweeney Todd )

And if I ever find a woman that pushes me to being everything I can be, I will do anything in my power to give her the world. Her character is truly beautiful, just by the way she treats Hank in the series.

Thank you!

I've always seen it as a case of Karen truely does loves Hank, but he just keeps on messing up and making mistakes, eventually pushing her away so she can try and get some sort of normal, stable life for herself and daughter.

However she (in the first series) is still "in love" with Hank but can't be with him due to his immature nature and wondering eye. She hopes that one day he will settle down and be the man that she wants him to be, but since that is never likely to happen, she shacks up with Bill, a successful, stable man who can give her the material and social stability she could never get from Hank.

From a larger perspective, you will find many women in Karen's situation (late 30s, kids) who will settle for a guy they don't love just so they can be married and not end up on the shelf.

But true love will always win out in the end I suppose and she will always return to Hank one way or another, hoping that he has finally grown up and matured.

Though Hank does rock, so from my point of view I hope he stays the rebel, womanising badass he is. A true inspiration to all us guys! :)

Hey Welshguy78 I like your answer from beginning to the end and I'm a woman. I like it that you don't want Hank to give up on his way of living, on his fidelity and love for his family and friends. He sure fights for them.
It's because Karen really loves him and hopes that he will grow up one day to be a responsible man. Hank loves her the same way, he wants her and Becca back, he wants to be the best man for her.
If this day will ever come this show will have to end because its premise is reached.
