Sam Rami has ruined the character of Peter Parker, because thanks to him, lots of people now think that Peter is a spineless, timid, pushover loser. Sam Rami claimed to be a huge Spider-Man fan, but I think he just looked at the pictures from the comics and never read any of the dialogue

I'm not sure what to say about Raimi as a comic book fan and I don't want to make any broad unfair assumptions to solely go on (I don't think he's lying about having read comics as a kid, but that just makes some of the choices all the weirder to me), but I agree with both of you wholeheartedly on the over-arching point. As well as how troubling it is that Raimi's films have not only skewed so many peoples' perceptions on what Spider-Man should be (even though I strongly disagree with that assessment I can at least see that as a subjective matter, however I cannot help but get really bothered when people claim that Raimi actually somehow IMPROVED on the character from the comics with the stuff he did. Sorry, I don't see how turning Peter Parker into a "choir boy" makes him a better character. At best he just makes him as easily digestible as possible for general audiences) but also somehow skewed perceptions on who the character from the comics is. So many people are now convinced that Peter Parker was something that he was not. (Or at the very least I have yet to see a compelling argument for why he is closer to the comic version)

I've read the comics for over a decade. The gist of spider-man is that Peter parker's life sucks. Sometimes he's the cause of his own problems. Sometimes not. He's also really not the coolest guy in the room either and he's whiney about his problems at times whether it's in his head or to another character. He's not a social outcast but he's still a huge f##king dork. His trials are what make the character likable though. But let's not forget he was Tony stark's b##tch for a short period of time in the civil war arc in the comics.

All in all Sam Raimi got the general idea of the character down. His spidey could have quipped more but I don't see a problem.
