He has ruined Dexter!

Dexter was a great show, but i doubt any guest actor could top Lithgow's amazing performance. The earlier seasons were good, and the last season was good as well, but i can't help but to compare it with the Trinity season, and i doubt anything could make a season as creepy as Arthur did.

Don't get me wrong, i am probably one of the few who actually thought the new season was pretty good, and i even liked Lumen's performance, but it did seem to me the writers had trouble creating an equally creepy antagonist, so they took the easy way out and made it a group of killer slash rapist guys led by a stereotypical sociopatic mental coach (a group of people who are creepy and untrustworthy by definition if you ask me). This way they tried to approach Lithgow's characters creepyness by tossing the most evil types they could find in, but it did come across a bit sought to me.

Therefore i dare say that Lithgow has ruined all other seasons of Dexter, because i can now only see the show in pre- and post- Trinity seasons which will probably never come close to the sheer brilliance this guy brought to the show. Even if Dexter is still one of the best shows on TV.

I kind of agree, but I think what the writers were looking for in Season 5 was to show Dexters Redemption after all that went down in season 4,think it needs to mellow out a bit before the next creepy killer comes along.

Having said that I think Johnny Lee Miller gave a good performance as a really creepy psychotic sociopath in the last few episodes of season 5 after all his buddies were killed off, I thought It was good that instead of dealing with 1 killer, Dexter is dealing with a whole group of them. Anyway i cant wait for season 6

John Lithgow is just so brilliant, and you're right, it'll be very, very tough to top him. They should get Joseph Gordon Levitt to the show, I bet he'd put in a good roll too.

BUT, Season 5 was lame aside from Debra's growth. I can't wait for the showdown between Deb and Dexter.

I do agree in some ways that series 4 "trinity" has spoiled Dexter, but there is some hope.

Having recently introduced my wife to Dexter, we have been watching the whole lot from series one through to series 5 and there is a pattern.

Series one was an excellent introduction to Dexters world. pulled all the emotional strings to get you to actually love a serial killer. Series two, was again excellent and was a brilliant continuation from series 1. It really brought to home that you don't want Dexter to be "exposed" Series 3 was more calming and settled dexter into his life as a farther/husband and introduced the concept of friends to him. Series 4 threw all that in the air danced all over it. It was by far the best bit of television I have ever seen.

When series 5 came along, I was hoping that he was going to go right after trinity and mess his $h1t up. I was a little disappointed with the series as a whole.

BUT, the way I look at it, series 5 has been a bit of a buffer, There was no way it was going to be as good as trinity, not unless the series continued on with trinity. It brought the pace down, and calmed things a little ready for the next series.

And what's in store for series 6?

The whispers are that the tale of trinity is not over! Filming on location in LA, has Dexter tracked down Trinity?

Don't want to spoil the trinity thing for those who haven't watched season 4 completely, but if you did watch it you'd know it's impossible to make even a single episode about Dexter tracking Trinity.

All that aside John Lithgow could be toped if the writers really push their creativity, not necessarily a sadistic serial killer character but maybe they could make a season with the villain as a detective that is on dexter's trail. Quinn has potential, his sidestory in season 5 was much superior to the Lumen / self-motivational preacher guy and he became a much more complex character than in season 4.

"they could make a season with the villain as a detective that is on dexter's trail"

The way dexter is written, anyone on Dexters trail is the "villain", so this has already been done in season two with Special Agent Frank Lundy? or do you mean a serial killer like Trinity on Dexters case?

My own opinion is that Trinity will be back... and soon. remember he was the only one of Dexters targets to escape him.

I know you didn't want to spoil it for those not yet watched season 4, but hey, its nearly 2 years since the beginning of season four.. people need to catch up
