Why so few films in the last decade?

Is it by choice, a preference for the stage, or simply lack of offers? She's obviously still mentally strong enough to remember lines. I would have preferred her as the Dowager in Downton Abbey instead of the bland, overrated Maggie Smith.

I think she prefers stage work now. She returned to Broadway in 2007 in Deuce. In 2009 she did Blithe Spirit and in 2009-10, A Little Night Music. In 2012 she did The Best Man and in 2013 she toured Australia in Driving Miss Daisy. In 2014 she did Blithe Spirit in the West End and toured the US in 2014-15. She will return to Broadway in 2017-18 in The Chalk Garden.

It was mainly due to her Husbands death, which she was devastated by, that she did not take on many roles until Nanny McPhee. I really wish she would just have on amazing last big screen role that was so amazing that it one every award going.

Yes, but as BritishFilms mentioned, she has done a great deal of stage work. I just notice she's done far less in film and television recently.

I actually liked Maggie Smith in the role, but it would have been fun to see Angela Lansbury in the role.

The thing is, Maggie Smith always plays the crotchety grand dame (A Room With a View, Sister Act, Tea with Mussolini, Gosford Park). 'Violet Crawley' would've been a departure for Lansbury.

I've actually never seen those movies, so maybe that's why we have differing opinions. It is hard to watch people play similar roles over and over, that's for sure.
