Was he some kind of lumberjack?

According to Wikipedia, he was named after electronics engineer Lee de Forest. Why I don't know?

Yes he was indeed in the lumber business. His father owned a lumber business and in fact provided much of the lumber for the series sets. To this day I believe Paramount still gets their lumber from "DeForest Family Lumber Company"
