>>Well among the protest they had mentioned that the Irish actor Cairn Hines is playing a character named Fujimana in the upcomng Miami Vice. So it does look like he is playing a Japanese man. The movie doesn't come out until June but it will be interesting if the director sticks to his guns by keeping him Japanese amid all of the protests about Geisha.<<
Hmm, that's bizarre. I can understand the criticism about all three major roles in Geisha going to non-Japanese actors. But Ciarán's role in Miami Vice, as I understand it, is VERY small. A couple of scenes, I think. That doesn't seem worth the protest. My guess is the character's nationality is irrelevant. And, just because someone has a Japanese surname doesn't mean they are a "Japanese man" -- all you would need is one male relative somewhere deep in your ancestry to have a particular surname.
I would also guess that the people who voiced protest at Ciarán's casting in this regard probably know no more about "Miami Vice" and this 'Fujima' character than you and I do. In other words, for all we know, they could have ALREADY changed the character's name and the IMDb is simply wrong. I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying it could be.
