Josh Hartnett reveals why he isn't a big star...

So, he turned down roles and made enemies of studio bosses and agents. I figured is was more than bad luck and box office flops that prevented him from working more and being an A-list actor. I understand that he wants to do 'serious' movies, but I think he should have waited unil he was an A-lister to begin being choosey. That's not to say in the meantime he had to do terrible films. There had to be 'serious' guest starring roles in tv shows, small parts in 'serious' films, or parts in 'serious' indie movies for him to take. At least that would've kept his name out there. Coming off as snobby so early in your career is clearly not a good look. Thoughts?

April 17, 2015 EDIT: Hartnett says he regrets turning down Chris Nolan's offer of Batman: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/josh-hartnett-batman-chistopher-nolan-1201474351/

Taking those giant roles is a risk in itself. Look at Anthony Perkins or George Reeves. They were so typecast after doing Psycho and Superman that it was worse than what's happening with Hartnett.

That's true, but at least they made the effort. All actors take a chance on every movie they choose. But they have to take the chance or they'll never know what could have been. Hartnett didn't take chances and as a result he alienated people who would otherwise have offered him jobs.

...it's not over yet. He is not wrong, he was just naive perhaps in confronting those greedy suits and thinking he could've pull it off the way he thought it was right. I admire his courage in doing so though.

I totally agree. He isn't wrong for craving a meaningful career. I just think he went about it the wrong way. Hopefully, he has learned to play the hollyweird game and we will see more of him in the future. He's a talented young actor and his talents aren't displayed nearly enough.

Maybe he just didn't want to become a lindsey lohan, he probably knew that being a young superstar in hollywood can serious screw you up and opted to take the road around that and still live out his passion, aka doing indie films to get off the radar long enough until he feels confortable getting back into the hollywood scene if that day ever comes.

Yeah, but I think there was less risk of that happening with Josh. He had already done enough other stuff to not be typecast. If his first role ever, or first famous role, had been Spiderman then maybe...but like Rob Downey Jr and Tobey Maguire, he already had other well known movies under his belt.

taking a chance!! Turning roles down is taking a chance that more roles will be right behind the ones you turn down..
