I just can't believe she did Scooby Doo.

Well the original script for Scooby Doo was a lot different and this was yet another case of her choosing a project that looked good on paper and ended up being something totally different. That's a recurring theme in her career.

But you're wrong, her career was not over because of it. She had The Grudge after that and it did VERY well. She also had a ton of other opportunities but made some bad choices. She still could've had a great career but she picked some risky projects and it didn't pan out well for her.

She had to do two movies because that was in the contract she signed .

As to why she signed in the first place the movie was pitched to her as more adult in nature ( sort of like the Brady Bunch movie ) but they went and rewrote the intent of the script to make it basically a kids movie after she signed

It's one of the reasons why she is so insistent in interviews about seeing completed scripts

How come? It was a big budget blockbuster version of one of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time. It had a popular cast of Hollywood star and was going to be a number 1 movie for kids and families. As a popular young actor, you'd be stupid not to take it on. I personally loved the Scooby Doo movies, they were fun. That's something I respect about SMG, she doesn't do something unless she wants to. She's proved her capabilities as a fantastic actress and doesn't need to prove anything to anyone at this point, so she makes choices based on what will entertain her. I would have loved to see her in Romeo and Juliet, Gangs of New York, Clueless and Stardust, but her schedule got in the way and she never fought (it seems) to get more scripts similar to the ones she'd have been in with DiCaprio (I even remember hearing she was wanted for Mary Jane in Spider Man but couldn't do it).

The first movie was a hit. Sequels are always a gamble and SD2 was one of the many that have lost.

I would blame SMG's representation more than her. The fact that her agent at William Morris told the press that he thought her film career was over until The Grudge became a surprise hit is proof that her team didn't value her with regards to going out to wrangle the hottest projects into her lap. Everything after that was poor luck.

The only reason it did so well in the BO was because tons of kids dragged their parents kicking and screaming to the movies to see the damn thing and please don't get me started on it's godawful sequel either because it was just unwatchable period.

Gosh, you are hilariously bitter about Scooby Doo. It made $275m worldwide on an $84m budget.

You should blame BTVS for her career slump, tbh. It boxed her into the "teen actor" demographic and its grueling schedule made it difficult for her to take a variety of roles during its run (contrast her film career to Katie Holmes, who was the WB's other breakout star between 1998-2003. Katie was in teen films, indie films, and mainstream films). As a result, SMG obviously attempted to make up for lost time--which is why she made so many films between 2004-2007--and she/her team didn't make good judgements of the scripts that came her way.

I think her career would have gone up if HBO had picked up The Wonderful Maladys. No one has quite been able to capture SMG's screen presence since BTVS, and based on the summary, that looked like it would have.

One thing that is on SMG's shoulders is her home-bodyness. She doesn't seem to have any buzzed-about writers or producers as associates/BFFs who would be anxious to create projects for her and sell her to the money bags of Hollywood.

I can't believe my dream teen idol quit acting and now anoying with this baking crap. So be grateful for those movies from past, even most of them are crap like Scooby Doo.

I mean, she's never been particularly great at choosing scripts.

At least Scooby Doo has its fans.
