I'd like to know it too.

Deep Rising is a guilty pleasure for me and think Famke Janssen was great in the role, so I've wondered this as well.

My guess is that Forlani and her management realized it was going to be a glorified B-movie and they wanted her out of the film because her career was starting to heat up. At the time, Forlani was just on the verge of a major breakout in Hollywood (which never happened but was a possibility at the time). It's possible she was even being considered for Meet Joe Black (which was considered a breakout role) when Deep Rising production was underway.

Either way, avoiding the film was a good move as it was a big flop. It probably would have sunk Famke Janssen's film career if she didn't have 8 films released in 1998, including films for Woody Allen and Robert Altman which distracted from Deep Rising.

In issue #113 of Mad Movies, the writer/director said: "When we started shooting Deep Rising, I had a 96 page script. We only cut one short scene for story reasons, to make the story progress faster."

That might have had something to do with Claire's departure since she left after three days of filming.
