he had a great screen presence i will check some of these out.

reply

I agree, he was always one of those actors you're happy to see appearing in any movie of any kind.

The Holly and the Ivy is so bad that even Elliott couldn't save it.

reply

To each his own, of course. It worked beautifully for me.

My wife and I watched it this Christmas, and we both were underwhelmed. We both had the same problem: the premise of the story is that the daughter had a secret that would anger the father to the point of tearing the family apart, so she carries this burden for years. When finally forced to tell the old man, he shrugs and basically says so what?

reply

And there's the sad & tragic irony of it. The daughter had lived with her self-imposed burden for all those years, only to learn that it was all unnecessary, and that she had wasted much of her life because of that false idea that she'd believed & embraced. More deeply, that she thought she knew her father, but in fact, only knew her image of him, not the actual man himself. Lack of understanding, lack of communication, lack of trust & openness, all of which she couldn't (or wouldn't) see.

At least, that's how it struck me.

reply

I guess.

It's just that all the self-therapy the family went through wasn't terribly interesting, at least not to us. It was kind of like The Breakfast Club in a way but not as much fun or engaging. Maybe it just wasn't for us.

reply

How we react can often depend on when in our lives a movie is first seen, and what state of mind we're in then. I was at a point in my life when the movie really hit home for me; at another time, it might not have done so, or at least not as much.

reply

I honestly can't think of a time when I didn't enjoy watching him in a movie.

reply

There are actors that just flat out improve everything they're in, even when they're supporting players. Doesn't matter the movie or the character, they're just so professional and improve the movie without trying to steal it.

Elliott is one of those. Others are actors like Ned Beatty, Burgess Merideth, Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell, etc.

reply

Oh, yes! :)

My favourite performance is in The High Bright Sun. It's not a great film (though a personal favourite) and he doesn't have the biggest role. But his character is a bit seedy, ignoble and ultimately brave, and fits him like a glove.

reply

Brimstone & Treacle (original)

reply

I was going to mention this too, he was great in that too, it's been so long since I saw them, was there much difference between the two versions?

reply

Other than 'Sting', the only other aspect is that the polished theatrical look lacks the creepy atmosphere of the TV play (still a pretty good film though) but 'Sting' is no Michael Kitchen

reply

A great actor. My favourite of his many fine performances is in Saint Jack but he’s also wonderful in Trading Places and A Room with a. View.

reply

He was also great in The Wicked Lady, Zulu Dawn, The Boys from Brazil, Hammer House of Horror and Tales of the Unexpected.

But of all his roles Trading Places and Raiders of the Lost Ark are my favourites.
