Poor career choices?

You are obviously more knowledgeable then I am concerning Faye's career and I sincerely hope you are correct. I have always liked her and admired her for taking chances even in roles like MOMMIE DEAREST it was on tv a few days ago and whilst the script is risible she definitely is not. BYE Bye Man is not a good film, not even for horror standards but she was good in it. If I had to hazard a pure guess I would imagine directors possibly remember the poor projects ( the one thing you can't say about any of them is that they are unmemorable). And perhaps it puts them off using her? I would love to see her in a film by a top director say Eastwood, Scorsese etc she certainly as not lost it and could get back up at the top where she belongs. Hopefully it will happen and she is on the comeback trail. The way her career petered out, and stalled reminded me a little of Karen Black except I don't wish to insult Faye! She is much, much, more talented than that and achieved a lot more. You look at Black's career now and it is dire just dross after dross but even in her heyday you could not compare it to Faye. No Oscars or top films! Basically she was noticed as a waitress in one of cinemas iconic scenes involving Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES and that made her reputation! She could not maintain it.

You're very right about Faye's career in two parts, though it is in Pre and post Mommie Dearest for sure. Eyes of Laura Mars was an excellent and bold decision she made after an Oscar win, and it played out wonderfully, as the film was very intelligently written and directed. Acting with that cast was gold. I don't know if you remember her in the 1990s when she was actually still extremely relevant and not in a retro Mommie Dearest cult kind of way. Her work in Don Juan De Marco, The Chamber, and hell, even Dunston Checks In were not only high profile movies, but she did some great work with some talented co-stars.

I see her 80's projects as being, for the most part, smart. Considering she was in Europe raising Liam most of that time, I'd say she did okay. It was after The Messenger it all went downhill, I think.

Faye was different from her peers because she had one of the most beautiful faces ever filmed, plus she was sensational at playing larger than life characters. It may have limited her options, but her peers would have looked absolutely ludicrous in those roles!
