As the saying goes... the time to make up your mind about people is never
1. Notes on a Scandal - Should have won
2. Mrs. Brown - Should have won
3. Shakespeare in Love - It's nice that she won but it's a consolation prize
4. Iris - Well deserved nomination
5. Mrs. Henderson Presents and 6. Chocolat - Nominated for being Judi Dench
If you don't know what they're saying, turn on the subtitles.
1 - Iris (Should have won)
2 - Notes on a Scandal (Had it not been for Mirren I think she might have won)
3 - Mrs Brown (Should have won)
4 - Chocolat (Lovely, touching performance, shouldn't have won though)
5 - Mrs Henderson (Great performance, she had such fun, but not sure it was Oscar worthy really)
6 - Shakespeare in Love (Great, but an Oscar - NO)
1. Iris
2. Mrs Brown
3. Notes on a Scandal
4. Chocolat
5. Mrs Henderson Presents
6. Shakespeare in Love
1. Notes on a Scandal Brilliant performance that completely departs from the sweet English ladies she typically played on film. Barbara is one of the juiciest and most complex role of Denchs film career. Had it not been for Mirrens Elizabeth II, Dench would have won. No contest.
2. Mrs. Brown pitch perfect performance, utterly heartbreaking yet subdued performance. The film is a rather simple one, examining the relationship between two very different people. A very simple and understated film, perhaps too much so for members of the Academy who prefer something flashier.
3. Iris Dench tears out your heart. The film is difficult for me to watch, largely because Dench is so convincing (and that's a good thing).
4. Shakespeare in Love Dench has only eight minutes of screen time, but she puts every one of them to good use. I might be in the minority, but I think she absolutely deserved the Oscar for this one. She does more with a gesture or a quip than most actors can do with a whole film. She is one of the rare breed of actors who can pull of any line and make it funny.
Besides, the Academy was making up for her losing the year before.
5. Mrs. Henderson Presents Dench gives a great performance, much better than the piece-of-fluff film deserves. Her presents alone elevates this very flawed film.
6. Chocolate A nice piece of fluff filmmaking, though hardly Oscar-worthy.
There isnt much left to say that hasnt been said before, except that Dame Judi Dench is one of the greatest talents we have today, on screen and stage. I adore her work, and hope to see her in more projects.
1. Mrs. Brown - The most complete and multidimensional performance of her career, in my opinion. Heartbreaking, poignant, and complex performance that deserved the Oscar.
2. Notes on a Scandal - Exceptional performance and deserving of the Oscar win. She brought so many layers and interesting aspects to this neurotic and mentally disturbed human being, it was a wonder watching her on the big screen. The only reason I consider this to be her second best is because Cate Blanchett was almost equally impressive in the same film with her very grounded and complex performance. Phenomenal actresses.
3. Iris - Magnificent. Subdued, quiet, subtle and deeply understated performance. One of her very best and definitely more deserving of the Oscar win than the rest of the nominees that year.
4. Mrs. Henderson Presents - Just so much fun. Worthy of her Oscar nomination, though not a win. She just had great fun in the film and that showed on the screen. It was lovely watching her.
5. Shakespeare in Love - The definition of an actress who manages to make the most of her limited screentime. She brought so much passion and detail to her Elizabeth portrayal, she was astounding. I'm not sure about her Oscar win, but she was definitely the MVP of the film.
6. Chocolat - The only performance of hers that wasn't worthy of Oscar consideration. She was good as always, but I didn't find anything particularly interesting about her character or the film, in general.
Iris - should have won
Notes of a Scandal - would have won if Mirren had been there
Mrs Brown - Should have won
Mrs Henderson - divine, but not win worthy - but a nod was right
Chocolat - thought she was divine, glad she was nominated!
Shakespeare in Love - she was great as always - but a win! Please!
