I think he would make an EXCELLENT Bond villain now, he has that Christopher Lee type of demeanor about him and also what you just mentioned about him playing James Bond, look at his message board and there is a discussion there about started by me about Charles Dance playing a "Bond Villain", you will see so many people responding about him rumoured to be in line to play Bond himself instead of Sir Roger Moore.

I hope he says no to villain roles in some of his upcoming movies it's getting very repetitive.

I just recently discovered he played Ian Fleming himself in a biopic actually called Goldeneye--a film I should check out--but given the fact that Alec Trevelyan in the other, better-known flick, was apparently written as a mentor figure to Bond with Alan Rickman in mind, I think Dance would have been spectacular in that role.
