ROSE FROM GYPSY IS NEXT EPISODE
ON NEW PBS SERIES CHARACTER STUDIES
...................................
Hosted by Phylicia Rashad, the second installment of the new PBS series Character Studies focuses on Rose, the indomitable mother in the well-loved musical, Gypsy.
The series, a biography show of the American theatres most compelling characters from the most significant plays and musicals of the last hundred years, premiered in April, and revealed the true story of Amanda from The Glass Menagerie.
Hosted by Eli Wallach, it included Julie Harris, Olympia Dukakis, Sam Waterston and Martha Plimpton.
The Rose episode in this half-hour documentary series includes exclusive interviews with Bernadette Peters, Tyne Daly, Crista Moore and Betty Buckley, and with Karen Moore, from the original 1959 Broadway production, starring Ethel Merman. There is always a tendency to identify a role with a star, stated Gypsy book writer Arthur Laurents in one of the shows segments, which is a big mistake. Laurents relates his views on how the role has evolved since the Merman production. Another of the musicals creators, Stephen Sondheim, is also featured in the show. Along with the interviews, the episode includes scenes and musical segments from the landmark musical.
Rose premieres on Thursday, June 22 at 9:30 p.m. on KCET.
