shareSoon, I hope. But I'm not holding my breath. I wish Brooks was more prolific.
shareAB is much like Charles Chaplin. He made a movie every 5 - 8 yrs. So we must wait on Albert. I love Defending Your Life. I had to go in surgery last year and I watched that movie the night before, it gave me so much "hope". And the surgery was sucessful and here I still am. Thanks Albert.
shareAgreed with above. Considering how long he's been making movies for, and that - let's be honest here, the days of Woody Allen and Albert Brooks comedies - along with stuff like Neil Simon are kind of going the way of the dodo to make way for the Judd Apatow's of today. (Don't get me wrong, I think Apatow is brilliant). But nowadays, Brooks and Allen's audiences are probably in their 50s and 60s (and maybe even 70s) - and in that sense, not who Hollywood wants to cater to in making money - not when you have "The Hangover" (which I thought was great) appealing to a much younger and wider demographic. Allen and Brooks are hysterical, but there stuff becomes acquired tastes compared to what's out there now in mainstream comedy.
I Woody Allen to an extent has to be given credit, because he's actually been able to adapt to an extent, now making dramas. I certainly hope Brooks gets to make a another film, but you have to wonder how likely that's going to be.
The question is, who are the new Brooks and Allens? Right now its Apatow, and I don't know if anyone else has made such a mark. Certainly as far as Mel Brooks is concerned, the spoof movies of today are horrible, and even those original creators of Airplane, Naked Gun, etc who are still working today aren't really matching their old standards.
It's a different time - not saying its a bad time, but some of the classic guys may be going away or be phasing out shortly. Personally I think its sad, because they did smart comedy, unlike most of what's out there now. (Meet the Spartans, anyone?)
Yeah its kinda sad- the old school witty, dry comedy seems to be fading- i cant stand all the stuff out there today thats dubbed comedy..just doesnt do anything for me . i guess indie films are the exception - i loved Sideways
shareBut look at Alexander Payne who directed SIDEWAYS, he hasn't made a movie since. I kind of love when great talent like Brooks and Payne take long periods of time to make films. It makes the film even more special.
shareAre you seriously comparing Brooks to Judd Apatow??? His stuff relies on f-bombing teenagers and bodily obsessed potbrains. The two aren't even close. Sure, Apatow is the current mainstream choice, but it really illustrates how hollow people will take their comedies now. "Here, don't think, just listen to a fart or some kid talk about poking some chick in the mouth."
shareI really hope he makes another film sooner than later. I love his work. "Mother" is SO underrated.
