Alexis may not have had much financially but his family has members that are financially very well off. The siblings would have been financially able to afford the meds without issue, even if they are not the wealthiest in the industry.
HIV is a virus that primarily attacks cells of the immune system. AIDS is a syndrome defined by various opportunistic infections or certain low blood markers that result from having an immune system weakened by HIV.
If you are infected with the virus and are either unlucky or manage it poorly, you can develop AIDS. It is, however, possible to be HIV+ and never have AIDS.
Magic Johnson as compared to Freddie Mercury might not be a fair comparison. Johnson, who was an athlete may have been in better health and/or took better care of his health. Just like with any disease genetics, overall health, where you live, lifestyle choice (drugs, alcohol, smoking) can all have an effect on health issues.
Johnson and Mercury surely did not live parallel lives. How long was one infected before starting treatment as compared to the other? Did they take the same meds, remember when they were diagnosed it was still in the toddler years of the disease and different doctors may have preferred different methods of treatment.
I am not certain what you mean by "confidentially cured." Magic Johnson is HIV+, he might have low to undetectable levels but he is still HIV+.
