His problems were because he was accused of raping Virginia Rapp, who he found sick at a party he was attending and she died. She was later found to have been suffering from a botched abortion which caused her death. He went on trial three times (two mistrials) before he was found not guilty. The jury actually read a statement where they believed him completely innocent and on behalf of the judicial system apologized for putting him through all of this.
His reputation was ruined though. He was in the midst of a comeback when he died.
In case your wondering my dad was a big fan and used to tell me stories about him all the time. It rubbed off and I started reading up on him years Ago.
