Anti-alcoholism

Has he openly expressed whether or not he is against drinking alcohol? Several of his films depict alcoholism in a negative light:
- Biff does bad stuff when is drunk in the Back to the Future movies
- Eddie overcomes his drinking habit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
- Lt. Dan’s life turns to hell when he resorts to getting drunk in Forrest Gump
- the entire main plot of Flight is Denzel Washington’s character’s drinking problem

reply

Who would ever be not against alcoholism?

reply

Alcoholism is a disease. It’s the only disease you can get yelled at for having.

reply

What are you talking about? Stop spreading ignorance please.
Alcoholism is an addiction, not a disease.
Look it up in a dictionary: there's a clear difference.

reply

Addiction is disease... this is the third stupid post I’ve seen you write today.

reply

Wait...you just read my mind! How are you wrong on any possible topic? What a talent!

reply

alcoholism can be a disease for some people, it's been scientifically proven that some people have a certain brain chemistry that is linked to alcoholism. pretty complex subject actually

reply

Well, ok the genetic predisposition is true. I bet that goes for serial killers too.
Should humans be given a pass every time they lack self control because of brain chemistry?
I draw the line at addictions: any behavior that affects others is not a disease, it's a public matter.

reply

It's not about free passes or drawing lines, it's more about understanding mechanisms. Morally judging doesn't help and is not productive.

reply

So this is the legendary conversation between Albert Einstein and Werner Heisenberg, exclusively here on MovieChat. I feel humbled, being witness of history.

reply

lol

reply

You might be reading too much into it. Alcoholism is a common storytelling device that can be used to suggest character psychology and traits in such a way that a widespread audience can understand.

reply

I guess that almost makes him an auteur.

reply

So he's not pro-alcoholism then?
