Except her birth name is Mary Sean Young.

You also have Daryl Hannah, Glenn Close and there must be a few others that have male names. At the end of the day you have the name your parents give you, her parents like Sean so that was it, but her first name is Mary, which is very common and normal.

When I first saw Ace Ventura I actually did think she was a man dressed as a (very good looking) woman because of her name....

This is the first time I've ever seen it spelled this way for a girl, but there's Shawn Johnson and Shawn Colvin who are both females.

Can Sean be a female name? Or did her parents want a boy?
Shaun Casey was a famous model working from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. So that name for girls, in various spellings, was floating around during that era.
