It seems like her career was rising with her pre-Titanic movies (Heavenly Creatures, Jude, Sense & Sensibility, etc). She was on a rampage. But after Titanic, it was like she was on a hiatus? She didn't make much films up until after Little Children (2006). Her career was pretty much "irregular", where it became more consistent again in the late 2000s and this decade. What was that about?
Kate has said numerous times that she didn't want to follow Titanic with another blockbuster. She went on to make smaller films like Hideous Kinky, Holy Smoke, and Iris (when she got her third Oscar nomination). Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) got a lot of critical and audience praise; have you seen it?

@Mad Max, i also thought ( until a few weeks ago actually )that she was the youngest actress to have 2 oscars noms.It was printed everywhere around the time of Titanic. And then some weeks ago , i was told that Angela Lansbur had actually 2 noms at 20! I was kinda disappointed, but well...I also thought she hold he record for 4 and 5 oms, and this isn't the case either.
share^^ This. She deliberately bowed out of making big movies for a few years until the Titanic hype died down. I remember Leo did something similar, despite also having an upward trajectory before Titanic.
They were smart - both of their careers developed nicely afterwards.
