Her career is SO messy

She is a talented actress, has a lot of potential to be a legend, yet I feel as if she's screwed up her career.

I mean, people like her and she's recognized by the Academy, but her roles are incredibly questionable, if not a bit stupid. The fact that she's playing in the Divergent series is RIDICULOUS... If anything, she should be in something like Mockingjay if she wanted to go that route. I just don't get her or the choices she makes.

Having a role like in Divergent doesn't necessarily mean a messy career. A great actor has at least one bad role choice. Even Julianne Moore has The Seventh Son and many other questionable role choices, but her career is fine.

You should give some more examples though. I don't Kate's career is messy; its just that her works in the past few years have been lukewarm to poor in terms of critical reception.

I think that the reason that most people say that her career is on the downward turn is because her recent films lack the good critical and audience reception her earlier ones did.

Her acting is just as good as it ever was barring Divergent and it's sequel maybe (I hope she got paid the big bucks for it). She was praised in Labor Day while the rest of the movie was maligned, was found to be one of the best characters in Contagion, good in Carnage...hell she did well in her small, thankless role in Movie 43. And turn your eyes to her TV work, you'd see that she netted both acclaim and awards for her interpretation of Mildred Pierce.

She's not really sabotaging her career intentionally, I mean she worked with some great directors post-The Reader, it's just that the films themselves aren't too lauded. But Kate has been said to be someone who acts because she loves it and doesn't really bother with the reviews so I guess she'll plough on.

I'm a huge fan of hers and I don't get some of her choices either. I mean, she has made some extremely (and I think unintentionally) good choices (everything she did before Titanic except A Kid in King Arthur's Court; Eternal Sunshine, The Reader and Revolutionary road, etc.) but lately she has also made some very questionable choices, I have to agree. However, things are looking bright for her once more. The Steve Jobs film has a strong script and she from what I've read, she has a solid supporting role which could get her an Oscar nomination. She's also starring in Triple Nine, which has positive early reviews, and she will be starring in The Dressmaker in the title role, which could also be very interesting.

reply

Not really. Particularly when you compare her to other actresses. So she's had a bit of a dry spell having Movie 43 (which was filmed ages before its release), Labor Day, A Little Chaos and the Divergent series. Most actresses experience that. Even Meryl Streep did.

Before that, she was just in Mildred Pierce, Contagion and Carnage.

It's an ordinary high school day. Except that it's not.

LOL Ofcourse not. she is doing every kinda role which is really a great thing ever. Meryl did very different kinda roles. doesnt mean her career is messy

in terms of volume of memorable movies Winslet is second only to Vera Farmiga for me...

Vera Farmiga's most memorable movies...

1.The Departed (2006) - 10/10 (my #1 film of 2006)
2.Source Code (2011) - 8-8.5/10 (my #1 film of 2011)
3.Up in the Air (2009) (my #2 film of 2009)
4.Running Scared (2006) - 7.5-8/10 (between my 7th-10th favorite movie of 2006. also, this contains my favorite scene of Vera's which is the 'pedophile scene' (that's not as bad as it sounds))
5.Orphan (2009) (my #4 film of 2009. also, she's the lead actress in this)
6.At Middleton (2013) - 7-7.5/10 (my #3 movie of 2013)

Kate Winslet's most memorable movies...

1.Titanic (1997) - 7.5-8/10 (my 3rd favorite movie of 1997)
-.Revolutionary Road (2008) (between my 7th-10th favorite movie of 2008)
-.Labor Day (2013-2014) (either my #1 or #2 movie of 2014)
4.Carnage (2011) - 7/10 (between my 9th-11th favorite movie of 2011)
5.The Reader (2008) (either my 12th or 13th favorite movie of 2008)

also, i assume 'Triple 9' (2015) will likely join Winslet's list above once it's released given the directors reputation with me.

p.s. technically, memorable movie status starts at a 7.5-8/10 from me but solid 7's are still worth mentioning/solid movies. so based on this Vera has five and Kate has three.
