Religious symbolism commod theme in most of his films.

He seems to have a fascination with Christianity and Jesus in particular, represented in films such as Robocop and heavily in The Fourth Man and Spetters. Reading that Empire interview also illustrates this. What are your opinions on Verhoevens own views on Jesus? Do you think he is religious or athiest? He likes the myth of Christ because of the violence linked to the religion?

I can't imagine a religious person making such awesome movies. If anything he has a distinctive anti-Christian vibe (most movies do not).

The answer should be in his book Jesus of Nazareth

I don't know what his religious views were back when he directed "De vierde man", because things like this change over the years, but right now, he's an atheist, as stated by him in interviews.

To give you a more accurate answer, I searched and found this German interview from last year, when he was talking about his book "Jesus of Nazareth": http://www.faz.net/s/RubD3A1C56FC2F14794AA21336F72054101/Doc~E174391A2 FAF64E179DCBE1D3FF1F1C52~ATpl~Ecommon~Scontent.html
Here he states: "If you believe in God, life gets easier. To me, the old sentence of the atheists counts: God doesn't exist, but I miss him a lot. With him, life would be far less depressing. The knowledge that everything will somewhen vanish, even Mozart's arias, is terrible. I don't think it's bad to be immortal. Why should we lose everything, including ourselves? That expectation makes me angry. The year-long sorrow of many people is just cruel. The whole book is a protest against the Creation."

Translation from the German by me. Sorry for contingent grammar mistakes.
