shareI actually think he is completely talentless.
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)
- Walt Whitman
I can't understand why someone finds his talentless, after his savage Dutch films and his incredibly subversive Hollywood satires.
Honestly in the 90s he was the best director working in Hollywood (if he was still working there today, he would still hold that crown)
Not the best director alive, that award would no doubt go to Godard, Hong, Kiarostami or someone... but definitely up there.
It's probably because some (or most?) people don't want to see "incredibly subversive Hollywood satires". Gathering from the echo many of his films received from critics, and many comments on message boards, Verhoeven was always heavily misunderstood and still is today.
Just look at the way Christopher Nolan gets overhyped these days. His films may be well-directed and written, but he never even tried being controversial. He avoids everything that could upset his fanboy crowd. Verhoeven's films will never enter the IMDb Top 250, because they're full of social criticism, and it's likely that one who doesn't agree with his views, will hate his films.
I dont think he is the best director ever, but he is one of my favorite directors. As a fan of sci-fi and action I was attracted by his big budget sci-fi/violence stuff, but also his "different" movies like Basic Instinct and Black Book were fascinating.
His ability to mix his clever satirical, almost subversive views and commentaries on society, progaganda, military, fascism, capitalism and history with great entertainment, top-notch action and special effects, is really unique. No other director I know would be able create such stuff.
deffinately the best director. Who else can make Starship Troopers and make it R-Rated? This is damn better than AVATAR.
... although I liked AVATAR too.
"deffinately the best director. Who else can make Starship Troopers and make it R-Rated?"
Ed Wood could have managed that, and couldn't possibly have made a worse movie of it.
