Streisand to direct 'Catherine the Great'

Barbra seems to have moved on from GYPSY already...

Producer Gil Netter announced today that Streisand will be directing the movie "Catherine The Great", penned by Kristina Lauren Anderson. The script was honored with the 'top spot' on 2014's "Black List" - Hollywood's 'insider list' of the year's best-unproduced-screenplays. Netter says with Streisand on board, casting should begin shortly.

Netter has produced "Life of Pi" which was nominated for 11 Oscars and won four, "The Blind Side" which scored Sandra Bullock an Oscar out of multi-nominations, and "Water for Elephants".

Streisand, 73, has directed three films in her career - "Yentl", "Prince of Tides" and "Mirror Has Two Faces" - with a total of 14 Oscar nominations for all three. No time-line has been given for the movie.

If Streisand has given up "Gypsy", she has awoken to reality.

If she has committed to directing a movie SHE IS NOT STARRING IN, it's
about time.

None of the films she has directed to date is a true classic (I watched
"The Prince of Tides" over the holidays on TCM and was reminded of
how truly embarrassing this cheesy, hammily-acted soap opera is).

She is a director of talent, but not genius, and had she worked to
develop her craft (like the directors she admires), rather than
spend YEARS between (vanity) projects, we might have a director of
merit, 33 years after her directing debut.

Her talent is, ironically, a victim of her immense ego.

I agree, but there are multiple problems with TPOT, not the least of which,
is its now highly dated style, which is way-too-glossy, and loaded with
overacting. Kate Nelligan is the most impressive, but even many of her
"older" scenes play like an episode of Dynasty. Nolte tries hard, but
he needed a stronger director. Worst of all, is some truly on-the-nose,
embarrassing dialogue. But, yes, the cheesy romance between Streisand
(who turns in a non-performance) and Nolte really takes the biscuit. And,
finally, Jason Gould was totally miscast, despite his physical resemblance
to his mom.

When the film was nominated for Best Picture, fans decried that Streisand
wasn't nominated for Best Director. The problem wasn't that she was
snubbed, but rather the film did not deserve a Best Picture nomination at
all, despite its ultra-glossy budget and star wattage.

And it looks like 2 time Oscar nominee Kiera Knightley will be playing 'Catherine', under Barbra's direction. Gil Netter ("Life of Pi" / "The Blind Side") of Netter Productions is the Producer behind the flick. Casting continues for the actor to play opposite Knightley, as the heir to the Russian throne.
