GYPSY to start filming in early 2017 ?

According to writer-director Richard LaGravanese, the script for the Streisand movie 'Gypsy' was finished in May, and filming will begin at the beginning of 2017.

“The difficult problem [with Gypsy] is making it cinematic,” he said in an interview this week.

“That’s the nut to crack. Coming up with a concept that helps to make it cinematic. For instance, you have ‘Some [People],’ which is this gigantic song which she sings in a kitchen, so how do you make that [cinematic]? These are the things that we worked on, making things more visual. Barry Levinson is directing, and he came on with a concept. It’s hard to describe without giving it away. He came up with a cinematic concept that I think works, but it means that things have to be changed a little bit. People have to embrace the fact that it won’t be the theatrical Gypsy—it will be the film Gypsy. But all the songs are there.”

LaGravenese has worked with Streisand before - 20 years ago, to be exact, on the movie 'The Mirror Has Two Faces'. He didn't reveal any more about the timeline, but said casting should be getting under way now that the script is complete. It's been long rumored that Streisand wants Lady GaGa to play Gypsy, and John Travolta to play Herbie. Recently, Streisand also mentioned Anne Hathaway as someone she considered for the role of Gypsy.

By the time the the movie starts production, the project itself will be six years old, and Streisand will be close to 75 when she plays the iconic role of 'Mama Rose'. She will also be co-producing with Joel Silver.

Last Fall, Universal had a change of heart and passed on the five-year old project. STX Entertainment picked it up this past April, and announced it was in 'advanced negotiations' with Streisand to move ahead on the project.

This vanity project has been doomed from the start.

Streisand "will be close to 75." Tsk, tsk, tsk, just like "Hello, Dolly",
Streisand is just to young for the role. Better wait until she's
80 to start filming.

I think the fact that he has said there have been changes made to make this more 'cinematic' is very revealing (to me).

He didn't say what the changes are, but that there have been changes from the to make this into a movie... and it almost sounds like a 'warning' or 'caution' to GYPSY die-hards. He does assure us all the songs are intact, so the changes (of course) are to the story...which makes me guess a timeline change from the musical.

So how much of these 'cinematic' changes have been made specifically to Streisand's age, and when the story takes place?

Cute, but at 75, Streisand (even if made to look 65), wouldn't be
believable as a mom to two young daughters.

Her voice? Streisand sounds better at 74 than both Sinatra and Lena
Horne did. But the huskiness in the high notes, and the thin
soft notes, combine to most that Streisand is what she is: a Senior
citizen.
