How about a remake of Mame

She would be great. The film with Lucille Ball was terrible so a remake in capable hands would be great.

The film rights are owned by members of Lucille's family who are not fans of this women.

Debra Messing would be good.
By the way the movie was excellent.

"MAME" was announced as a potential project for her in 1999-2002 with great fanfare. First, she was to star and direct the film for theatrical release. Jerry Herman had (allegedly) asked her to remake the film because he was appalled by the Lucille Ball movie, and always wanted a better version on film. It seemed like a done deal, but time went on and nothing.

Then it was announced it would have a smaller budget, and be done as an ABC TV Movie, as they were doing some successful movie musical remakes at the time ("Cinderella", "Bye, Bye Birdie"). She was to be a producer on this one, as well.

Then it went back to the big screen format with a slightly smaller budget than the first time, only she was to produce and direct - not star. It was widely reported that she had asked Cher to star, and Cher was on-board. Streisand (allegedly) asked that they drop the song 'If He Walked Into My Life' because it slowed down the film, and Herman disagreed. So Streisand dropped out of starring in it, but still wanted to direct.

Then it went back to being an ABC movie, with Cher starring and Streisand directing/producing.

Then Jerry Herman yanked the whole thing for two reasons:

1. He wanted to revive it on Broadway. Some of the names mentioned to star in the revival were Michele Lee, Christine Baranski, Tyne Daly and Bernadette Peters (2003-05). The revival never happened. The movie never happened, either.

2. He was not at all happy with Cher starring as 'Mame', and had more disagreements with Streisand on what should be cut from the show.

Streisand's (unspoken, but obvious) rule of thumb is that she's too big
for TV movies, other than being a producer. She would NEVER star in a
TV musical adaptation.

To drop "If He Walked Into My Life" from this great show would be out
and out absurd. It would be akin to axing "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy."

Cher directed by Streisand?? Lol! I remember reading that and thinking it
would never happen. How right I was.

Not necessarily. Streisand was going to produce and star in Larry Kramer's 'The Normal Heart', even when the film looked like it was going to be an HBO production in the 1990s, not a cinematic release. Kramer is the one who objected to it being a TV production, and the project stalled...and then fell apart.

That's quite an exaggeration.

However, when Herman - or anyone else - is dealing with Streisand, they have to understand she's going to bring her own artistic vision to the project, and it won't necessarily be well liked.

"That's quite an exaggeration." Sorry, I highly disagree. Herman's
"Mame" is one of the greatest musical scores ever written, particularly
when one considers he handled both music and lyrics. "Life" would
be known as the "11:00 number", the big one for Mame, as she ponders
"what if?" It's a truly great song in a truly great show, and for
Streisand - of all voices - to drop it would've been a gigantic mistake.
Slow down the movie? ONLY if the film was poorly directed and paced
to start with.

Ball looked old, and couldn't sing nor dance. She was way out of her league in this one. She was trying to break her 'Lucy' mold which she had been doing for nearly 25 years on TV, and failed.

No comparison to Streisand at 75.

How about something original? Why do people want Barbra to do stupid remakes?
