1) With regard to Star Trek and dialogue, Marina didn't write the dialogue so don't blame her for the fact that it took the writers years to work out what exactly Troi was there for! Even the most amazingly skilled actress can only do so much with lines like "I sense great pain and fear", "I'm sensing hostility", "Captain, he's hiding something", and "Mother, don't do this to me". In short, it's not her fault the Star Trek writers took forever finding Troi anything worthwhile to say/do besides sensing and feeling and talking about chocolate occasionally. Just because Marina played one character whose dialogue clearly wasn't up to your standards, Hawkson101-1, doesn't mean she's a "terrible" actress. Try watching her as someone other than Troi, and see what you think.

2) Leave the accent out of it - Marina based Troi's accent on that of an Iranian friend of hers who learned American-English, so to criticise it would be mean to her friend and anyone else who really speaks that way. Just because you disliked Deanna Troi's voice doesn't mean Marina can't act, especially since it's not as if she speaks that way in every film/TV programme/play...! Admittedly she sounds VERY American these days for someone from London...but that's clearly an occupational hazard of leaving Tottenham for LA, lol!

3) "What do you think" should have a ? on the end, otherwise it's not a proper question.

Rina and I had a good laugh about this years ago. She and I spoke about this in person, so you can quote me. The reason behind her "unidentified" accent has everything to do with Picard's character. Since Patrick Stewart is also a British actor, the producers didn't want to hear 2 British accents, especially not coming from character's who have completely different backgrounds. Because of this (these are her exact words) she was told by producers: "Since his character is a lot more important than yours," she had to use a different accent. At first she wasn't too happy about this. She told me that, under her breath, she muttered to the producers: "He's supposed to be French!" -Good one Rina-

I'd heard that (well, some of it) before...seems a bit racist/accentist/whatever not to want two Brits on the bridge. I have three main things to say about this:

1) Since Patrick and Marina are from different parts of England, their accents are different anyway. Still English, but different. It's a good thing Marina can speak in a variety of accents, or if it was such a problem they'd have needed to cast someone else.

2) Marina should have yelled at the producers, not muttered under her breath...! Picard's the least French Frenchman ever!!! Just because he says "Merde!" once in a blue moon doesn't make him convincingly Francais! What's French about reading Shakespeare and drinking Earl Grey tea, for crying out loud?!? [lol]

3) It wouldn't make sense, though, for Troi to sound like a Londoner if she had one Betazoid parent and one American one...not that having her sound pseudo-Iranian did, either, really(!)

I think she is a good actress...I just think Troi was a kinda crappy character. I didn't really like Troi that much in the beginning, since I kinda thought she was a pointless character, and i could never understand why she was a senior officer, when she really didn't seem to have any qualifications, besides being half-Betazoid, and being empathetic. However, as the show went on, and I saw more, I liked her more. I think that is not because of the character, but because of the WAY Marina played her. I think it was just a bad character, but I think Marina made it better, so I DO think she is a good actress. I also think she's gorgeous, and she IS talented. I just think the character of Troi was kinda crappy. but Marina made it her own, and did the best she could with it.

I want to like her stuff so badly, but I'd have to agree that she's awful. Remember her as that Russian scientist on SG-1, beyond horrible, sticks out in my mind years later, had to change the channel. Troi was bad, but compared to everything else it was the cream of the crap.
