On the contrary, when he was cast in Talladega Nights, most people thought he "didn't belong" in there. John C. Reilly the Loveable Buffoon is a fairly recent creation, and before that, he was known for films like Gangs of New York, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Hours, and so on.
And some people still wish he would go back.
