Gene Hackman of his generation?

Hackman is one of my favorite actors, but do you think John has a somewhat similar career in terms that both are versatile and can switch effortlessly frmo comedy to drama. He was actually being compared to Hackman when he first started acting, in that while both wernt the best looking actors they were the more reliable character actors

He wishes. He actually self proclaimed that he was aiming to be the Gene Hackman of his generation. Check out his quotes in the trivia section. I think it's the last one listed. But yeah, this guy is no where near Hackman status.

I agree with the guy who commented above, he's not as good as Hackman in my opinion. Gene Hackman seems very natural in the films I've seen him in. John C Reilly's acting seems a bit forced to me. I think he definitely resembles Hackman a little appearance wise, which is why people like to make that comparison. He actually has more of a Karl Malden look if you ask me.

John is good but Hackman is one of the greats. John can't fill those shoes and he shouldn't try to. He definitely resembles Gene I'll give him that. But acting wise I don't see it. I agree that his style is much more Karl Malden-esque.

Gene Hackman? Reilly is average to okay at best lol!
Can he carry a film on his own?? Because I haven't seen him do it.
