I know his film debut was Casualties of War... Did they strike up a friendship then?, because then they again shared significant screen time together in We're No Angels and State of Grace, and then both appeared in The Thin Red Line.

John was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast recently and mentioned that he taught John a lot during the making of Casualties of War (both by example and straight out advice). When We're No Angels was starting, Sean told John he should try out for the role. He also told him to not accept every role that he was offered or that his agent told him about, but only the ones where he thought it would be good for his career.
