A Victim of the Media

Her oscar speech has for many years been used by the media to portray her as some sort of nazi-jew hater. And I, and im sure many others too, just accepted this. Untill that is, I recently saw that 'infamous' speech. I was shocked. Not by the speech, but how ridiculously overblown the hoo-hah was surrounding it. All she said was thank you to the Academy for not 'being intimidated by the threats of small bunch of zionist hoodlums' - the hoodlums, shes talking about, were the thugs outside threatening the Academy, Vanessa's life and burning effigy if they dared to honour her for her astounding acting performance. She has EVERY RIGHT to acknowledge them and call those terrorists 'hoodlums.' Why then has the media portrayed as some sort of nazi? when SHE was the victim. She, like many others including leftwing Jews, does not agree with the actions of the Zionist movement. Does this mean its ok to label someone a nazi? to malign them all these years? She receieved a small boo when she acknowledged them in the crowd. But when she made her pledge to continue to fight against anti-semitism and facism, she recieved a huge round of applause. WHY WAS THIS NOT RECORDED IN THE MEDIA? I feel angry at having held such a false view because i passively believed what the media, with its all hidden agendas, led me to believe of this astonishing actress.

She upsetted some people at the time for her documentary The Palestinian and was in England trying to spread her left wing, marxist political beliefs to the working class over and over. She gained a reputation in the '70s as a bit of a loony and that speech just set people off. She really didn't say or do anything wrong.

I have never had a problem with her, she is a wonderful actress and should be celebrated for her strength and strong mind.

She also followed a vile Trotskyist called Gerry Healy.

reply

Republicans are better known these days for doing what Healy did or was accused of doing. My point is that one man shouldn't be used as a slur against Trotskyites.

When one looks at the left, Trotsky was the one man who stood up to Stalin and was murdered for it. Trotsky was a small 'd' democrat and a true man of the people, not an authoritarian dick. Redgrave is to be respected for that even if she was a communist, she associated with the good communists.

Look at his record.in power.

Thanks for the nice comments about Trotsky, Onan! Some of these Americans don't realize there were differing factions of socialism. We should never forget it was Stalin who derailed the Revolution and turned it into a repressive, bureaucratized nightmare.

reply

I was a Trotskyite in college. Moved on a bit, you have to play the capitalist game to survive.

reply

I disagree with that. You might have to work inside the system to make ends meet by getting a job, getting credit, etc., but you can still think about socialism as the future. I read the World Socialist Website (wsws.org) everyday because it has the best political writing I know. Its position is that of the Trotskyist movement. These people are historically-grounded and committed to the scientific principles of Marxism. They have good critics for the arts as well.

Thanks for the link.

And don't forget about anarcho-syndicalism.

reply

He's obviously talking about a Jewish world conspiracy. I support the Palestinians. But I don't buy it.

reply

Puhlease, if you knew anything about her political activities and statements you'd realize that's exactly what she is.

reply

Fuck this anti-Semitic twat!
