Why did his wife use a surrogate?

Dennis' wife had 5 miscarriages. Apparently she could conceive but couldn't carry the baby to term. So they hired a surrogate using Kim's eggs and Dennis' sperm.

Ah ok, that's quite tragic. At least they were able to get a surrogate.

Many people over the years have used surrogates from celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker as well as civilians like my friend's niece. I have never heard it being illegal. It is giving life to a child or children, so why would it be illegal? I am not in the medical field and do not know the exact procedure but I am sure the doctors make sure the woman who is carrying the baby is able to carry a child to term, and that she has all the tests to ensure she is healthy. In Dennis and Kimberly's case, it was her egg and his sperm, that were fertilized and then implanted in the surrogate's uterus. The uterus is just the carrier.

I am a very big fan or Dennis, and have read everything about him I can get my hands on. I have also been lucky enough to have met him and seen him play with the Sharks on 3 separate occasions, in 2001 and 2002. He is a really great guy, very down to earth and accessible to his fans. I never met his wife, although I have heard she is very sweet.
