I heard he retired. Is this true? Where is he now?

He retired long ago. Martin Scorsese was able coax him out of retirement for The Irishman but that's it.

You might be right. This was a passion project or De Niro and he's probably the one who got the ball rolling.

FYI: The official reason he opted to retire is that he decided to pursue music full time. One thing I never learned, does he actually write music or just perform with his band?

That I don't know. Perhaps Harry broke out of prison not to rob more houses or stores, but to join a band.
