DeNiro has actually played different types, believably. He is an actor.
Pesci is typecast because he can, like most people working in cinema, only play himself.
He has NO range.

Home Alone and Goodfellas, two totally different types of characters, did extremely well in both, therefore he is a great actor. Yes he does often get typecast but still, Home Alone and Goodfellas were both huge hits so you don't need to look any further.
