Come on Ellen was great.

Ellen was fantastic. She is very personable and extremely likeable. Neil Patrick Harris did alright but his skits just weren't funny. The whole "his prediction brief case thing" was not funny and got old very fast. Surely the hosts have the power to write a bit of their own material?

Because the Oscars is set in a tight time frame and it follows a strict structure, it is 98% of the time scripted. Sometimes the hosts have the ability and the go-ahead to make a quick improvised joke when the time calls for it, but most of the time any jokes made are already pre-written.

Things like Neil going around the audience talking to the seat-fillers, the "brief case" thing, the underwear skit...all pre-written and all written by a team of writers.

I do believe though last year Ellen was allowed to write her own script, and she didn't even follow it. Most of the time she was improvising and it all fell flat. As much as I didn't think Neil did very well, I thought Ellen last year was worse. The selfie and the pizza thing was so obviously off-the-cuff and had no thought to put to it at all.

Neil may have had bad writing, and the jokes were unfunny, but at least they were already pre-planned so he wasn't bumbling through his speech and trying to think of another stupid thing to say like Ellen was last year.

I like NPH and I like Ellen. I thought Ellen bombed last year at the Oscars. That pizza routine was ridiculous. But, NPH was so much worse.. His locked box was even more stupid than Ellen's pizza.
