Dunedin, NZ show 17/03/2013
I just wanted to say what an incredible show it was tonight. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to meet one of my all time favorite people working in film. You are so inspirational to me, Mr Glover, as well as insightful and considerate of things the majority of an audience wont understand or even think to question.
The movie was something else, and its not something Im ever going to forget. It wasnt counterfeit, nor perfect or comfortable in the traditional sense, but it is an important film, and every film like this one, good or bad, is also important because it generates uncertainty and passion.
We need less of what the corporations puppeteer and more of what the creative region of the project brings to life, because thats when important questions are asked and not tainted by someones concept of perfection in the sense of how can this film make the most money?, and how can we construct this film to be socially acceptable to the majority of the audience?. Theres a cleanliness involved with the creative process of most big budget films, mainly because theres a limited number of ideas, theyve sacrificed creativity and controversy to appear uncomplicated to the general public to reduce the amount of thinking necessary.
Two of my favorite films; 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick and Eraserhead by David Lynch, had the same surreal, almost abstract foundation about them which forced me to interact with them emotionally and mentally in order to understand certain questions they posed. These films are of high importance to me, and I look forward to seeing what other projects you have planned, Mr Glover. Thank you for taking the time to visit Dunedin, New Zealand.
Take care,
Jasmine
