I just watched the old clip when he was on Letterman years and years ago. Was he coked out or something?

From what I've read, he was just in character as Rubin from his movie "Rubin & Ed". It was a promotional type act. Although I don't know if Letterman was in on it. I certainly thought it was real seeing it as a kid back in the 80s.
