"Utopia" remake for HBO

ANY news on this at all? Heard about it a couple of years ago and recently just learned that the show was canceled in the UK after its second season.

Now pick a political party, a news network, and bumper sticker and start getting mean.

I've read somewhere that they were about to shoot. Nothing confirmed though.

They can't shoot anything without a cast.

One random dude on twitter tweeted that Rooney Mara was in "advanced negotiations" to star in Utopia but it was weeks ago and there's been no official news. He said that the other series that Fincher was shooting was cancelled to make room for Utopia (??). Not sure if I buy that. It seems unlikely that HBO would put out the money for casting, production, shooting, etc... and then simply abandon it. I think they saw the footage, were horrified with what Fincher was doing, told him to change it, he refused, and it was all shut down. Kinda makes me wonder why they'd want to get in even deeper with him for Utopia, but this is all speculation.

None of the legitimate news sources really picked either of those stories up. Mara's upcoming schedule seems very busy, not sure when she'd have the time to make a huge series like this, or why she'd even want to. If she's the main character, HBO will want a multi-season commitment and again, I don't get why she'd want to limit herself like that for a remake of a cancelled show.

My conclusion? the guy on twitter was full of it. I guess time will tell.

David Fincher HBO Pilot ‘Utopia’ In Jeopardy Over Budget Issues

Prospects appear grim for Utopia, HBO’s drama pilot from David Fincher, an adaptation of the Channel 4 series created by Dennis Kelly. The issue I hear is budgetary, as the director and the pay cable network are yet to agree on a budget for the high-profile, big-scope project. The pilot already has cast a number of actors, including Fincher’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara, though all deals are contingent on a budget agreement, which has not been reached yet and chances are getting slimmer. I hear HBO executives want very much to be in the David Fincher business and are hoping for a hail mary pass but odds appear slim at this point. UPDATE 6 PM: Still no official word from HBO, but I hear that the actors cast in Utopia have been released, indicating that the pilot may indeed be dead.

I hear the plan had been for Fincher to finish prepping Utopia before resuming work on his other HBO project, 1980s comedy Videosynchrazy, whose production was halted for additional script work. Fincher is a very hands-on filmmaker, so no writing can be done without his involvement.

Utopia revolves around the die-hard fans of an iconic, underground graphic novel who are suddenly launched into their own pop-culture thriller when they learn that the author has secretly written a sequel.
