I see he was competing up against DeNiro in Raging Bull, but shouldnt he have competed against Hoffman (and others) in Kramer v. Kramer...TGS was released in '79, not '80...

The reason is because it wasn't released in theatres until 1980. It was actually originally shown on cable television under the name "The Ace." But, after getting some great reviews, the name was changed and it was released in threatres.
Pretty cool story.
