According to his bio he's been married 4 times but there's no mention of any children with any of these wives. Why no kids for Duvall?

I recall reading an interview with him that this was one of the things he missed in his life, not having kids, but he just couldn't get children, I even think he used the words "shooting blanks".
As for adopting kids, I can't remember if he mentioned it, but I think he did, and felt that he was "too old" to become a dad at this time, (the interview was two years ago or so, I think).
