Bigger range than he's given credit for

Shockingly, I've heard lot of people accuse Robert Downey Jr. of always playing himself. Now, Tony Stark was a role that he was born to play and he's great at playing the snarky, confident characters because that's the kind of guy he is. However, don't let that fool you into thinking that he's just a one trick pony. For proof, just go watch the criminally underrated Chaplin. Granted, he usually seems to play characters that are similar to himself because that's what studios WANT him to do. However, whenever he's given a chance to stretch his range and show his ability to transform himself, he never disappoints.

The reason I'm writing this post is because I included RDJ in my Top 10 Best Actors Without Oscars video on my new YouTube channel. If you don't mind, check it out and let me know what you think. I'm trying to get my channel to grow and thought the best way to do that is to share it with my fellow film lovers. If you like it, I'd GREATLY appreciate it if you subscribe. If you don't like it, any constructive criticism is welcomed with open arms. Thanks so much!

He was nominated for "Chaplin" and is regarded as a very talented and versatile actor. If people don't know what he did before Iron Man, that's their own ignorance showing. He's doing a lot of cash-grab movies now because A) he can, B) he has children and money comes in handy and C) he knows enough about the business and life that no matter how high up you are at the moment, that can change in a heartbeat. He's taking advantage of his situation and who can blame him? It doesn't mean he's not still a brilliant guy at his craft.

I don't know. I've considered RDJ a great actor for a very long time.

Less Than Zero comes to mind when I think of Robert Downey Jr.

He most definitely is at that point where he can take advantage or not, but can't knock a guy down for wanting to run to the bank with these roles.

Thank you @cinemaddix. It's frustrating that people now are reducing him to Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes, and aren't interested in his other works the slightest. His range is pretty broad, though yes, the sarcastic, crafty characters are a strength of him. Totally agreed on Chaplin. To only see how his eyes become the eyes of an old man - Hell, this is acting in perfection. Also Less Than Zero, Restoration, A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, In Dreams, The Soloist, Fur, One Night Stand, ffs even Tropic Thunder show a lot other facets of his range. Honestly, in Civil War it nearly brought me to tears to see some scenes, knowing how far this man could've played the story out, and how little he is allowed to show due to the mainstream.

has a thing for the dude portraying the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude

I couldn't agree with you more. I have followed his career since the mid-eighties, and he is wildly talented and versatile.
