It was pretty common back then for actors. I don't think he/they were ashamed. There was a definite anti-Jew bias at the time so they adopted gentile sounding names.

Dude, it's very obvious that Bernard Schwartz would be an awful stage name for an actor.

Although you do have a point that in the 50's when he went into acting, there was a lot of anti-Semitic bias among Americans.
