His accent in Rocky Horror

I noticed there were certain words that he pronounced differently from many of the other British accents I've heard and I'm wondering first of all if he was using a different accent than his own real one (since many places in England have different accents) or if he was just playing it up for this role.

I'm specifically talking about words like "around", " ground", "proud" and "down", among others. The "ow" sound in particular in each of those words was very different than maybe any other accent I've heard. Is this a specific accent for a specific region?

Maybe it's a dumb question but I really like British accents and I notice these subtle differences when I listen to speech.

Tim is well documented as saying he wanted Frank N Furter 'to sound like the Queen...' - it's a very 'posh' British Accent - originally inspired by a well to do Kensington lady on a Bus who apparently turned to her companion and said 'do you have a hice in the town or a hice in the country...'

A good place to hear about his accent choice is on his NPR interview from 2005:

That's awesome thanks for posting this link! It makes sense why he would've used such an accent for Frank N Furter then.
